                  Standard Window Installation

Careful planning must be done when adding a window or windows,to insure that your home improvement is actually an improvement and not an unsightly and costly liability. It is important that the new window match with existing windows as to shape and size, and type of window.Sometimes location is predetermined by available wall space, but consider the look of the window inside and out.

When chooseing a type of window, choose one that will complement the age and style of your home.A new style vinyl window would be inappropriate for an antique colonial with nine-over-nine double-hung windows, but a perfect choice for a ranch-style contemporary.

To envision what a new window will look like, cut a piece of roofing felt(tar paper) and tape it in place. Then view it at various distances, from diffrent angles and and pay attention on how the window will balance and blend with doors, roof lines and walls.

Be careful to make the right choice.Windows are the "eyes"of the house and ,
perhaps more than any other single element, they will determine its external character and beauty.

Regardless of the type of window required, preparation and installation is similar for all.Typical frameing would be 2"x4" studs with a 2"x6" header.

In older houses ,the dimensions of frameing lumber, inside finished wall, and outside sheathing can vary widely from what is standard today, and in order to match them some creativity will be called for. When building the rough opening,1/2"to 3/4"from the unit is a good, although sometimes it may be more or less.

Center unit in opening, shimming, top middle and bottom.Tack unit in one top corner and level, once level, tack the other corner and work your way down.Do not bow the window when placeing shims, bowing the rail will prevent the window from working correctly.

Windows are susceptible to leaks.Make sure you install all water-shedding components-tar paper, drip cap, flashing, sideing, caulking. When you are in doubt,
investigate on the internet.

A new window can increase natural lighting, visibility, and possibly ventilation to the interior while enhanceing the exterior of the house by adding balance to the existing fascade.
